Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Largemouth Bass are the most popular freshwater game fish in the United States. They are found in many lakes from coast to coast, southern states like Texas and north to Canada. Good bass habitats are typically lowland lakes, artificial impoundments of all sizes, permanent pools of streams, and quiet backwaters of large rivers. They thrive in warm, moderately clear waters with little or no current and feed on fish, crayfish, large insects, and, occasionally, frogs, mice, snakes or other small animals that fall into the water. Average sizes of adults range 10 to 20 inches long and weigh .5 to 4 lbs.

The current world record largemouth bass was caught near Jacksonville, Georgia in Montgomery Lake on June 2, 1932 by George Perry. It weighed 22 pounds 4 ounces. It is one of the most sought-after records in the fishing world.

I've been fishing for Largemouth Bass most of my life. Southeastern Virginia is blessed to have numerous farm ponds and some high quality medium sized lakes that make up the regional fresh water supply and bass are the main freshwater gamefish.
