Speckled Trout are an important game fish in the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. They are easy to
identify, having elongated bodies with spots. The spots are more prominent when young and are more
numerous. Specks have two very easy to recognize identification features. They have two large canine teeth
and the inside of their mouths are yellow. The average size Speckled Trout is about 1-4 pounds but the
current IGFA world record is 17 pounds and 7 ounces, caught by Craig F. Carson out of Ft. Pierce, Florida
on May 11, 1995.

The young speckled trout start their lives out in the marshes and creeks. As they grow in size and becomes
less vulnerable to larger predators they move there residence further out. Speckled trout are a schooling
species. They are very popular with anglers and considered a challenging catch and good eating.
The speckled trout in the photo (above center and rubbing left) was caught by Bart Tuthill of Portsmouth, Virginia in November 2008, it weighed 12 pounds, 12 ounces and was 33 inches long. RESOURCES Wikipedia - Speckled Trout Information |
